Also, right now there are a *lot* of open rental units in Boston, Cambridge, etc., so rents are pretty negotiable. I know some people who own rental units and have said they're sitting empty so in that respect it's a good time to rent in Boston.

I'm looking to move > to Boston within the next 2 years or so; Back Bay or Beacon Hill?!? We lived on Beacon Hill for the first 5 years were here - GREAT neighborhood, but very pricey. However you can find (VERY SMALL) deals - I was working at 7-Eleven ($7/hour) while we lived there and I could afford the rent. You might do better however to see where you're going to work - if you're working out in the suburbs it's insane to pay city rents to commute out - especially if you need a car (NEVER own a car in Beacon Hill - just don't do it). Cambridge and West Somerville can be great areas to live. The rents are about the same, but you get a lot more space. I'm on the outside edge of West Somerville: that's only 6 miles from Back Bay - I can bike to work in 1/2 hour. I have to assume that you'll be renting however (either that or you're rich) since buying a house is pretty much out of the question for just about everyone. (In our neighborhood three-family homes are the norm - renting a three bedroom from one can be as high $1500/month, but buying the house will set you back $350,000-$550,000). > I've heard that Welmouth (?) is the technology meca there. Is that > true? It depends on what you mean. Most small companies can't afford city rent so they stumble out the fringes of the commuter system. However most tech jobs with are with corporate IT departments: large insurance/Investment companies (Like NEF, where I work, John Hancock, Fidelity, State Street, etc). These are all either downtown or in the Back Bay. Cambridge, especially, is littered with bio-tech companies and investment incubators. The entire area (and its 200 some odd colleges) has a lot of university IT departments to look at. There's also a LOT of hospitals in Boston (all with IT departments) and a large collection of small companies that focus on medical software - some of which use CF. Right now the whole area is (like everyplace else) subdued - what work there is contract work. But it IS picking up - in the year or two that you're talking I expect things to be much brighter.
