If a cat goes outside, he must be able to draw blood as nature intended. If you want your outdoor cat to live then leave his claws intact.
Declawing severely weakens their legs because it destroys some of the muscular anchoring structures in their paws. If your cat is indoor only, get a pair of cat claw nipper scissors and trim the tips of his claws once a week. Four minutes a week for nipping and your cat's legs will maintain their strength.
