Because the underlying principle of Libertarians is individual liberty. ie:
no laws. On that, the mantra can become rather rabid about NO LAWS!! LAWS
BAD!!! See, extremism.

So while the left/right axis of the Dem/Rep parties are about opposing
philosophical approaches to problems, they both accomplish the goal through
the same tool (axis) of passing laws. That's why I say Libertarians are on a
different axis (no laws).

It just so happens that by working at a tangential axis that the Libertarian
will intersect the left/right axis at times which makes for the appearance
of being moderate.
