The easiest for me was to pay a visit to the local state department of
revenue office and give them $30 to register a business. Mine happens to be
a sole-proprietership which basically means it's just me doing some
occasional work and I have to tell them once a year what I made. Doing the
taxes is just handled as a simple form on my regular personal taxes.

Sometimes they make you report quarterly which is a little more work. Just
let them know that it's very little work and that you would prefer annual
reporting (if that is your preference.)

I would recommend checking out the LLC option. It's almost the same as a
sole-proprietorship except that you get to protect your personal life from
your business life. So if someone sues you, they wouldn't be able to take
your home.

And hey, it's cool and trendy to say "I'm a business."
