Yeah, that's a pisser. I'm guessing though that you checked the box in the
prefs that said "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library".
That's unchecked by default, but yeah it really pooches your files if you
check it.

So heads up people: DON'T CHECK THAT BOX!

Apple really, really, really deserves to get kicked in the boys for not
putting up an alert box to warn users of a change like this. iPhoto does the
same thing. It's icky. Apple really is into the "my way or the highway"
approach lately.

BTW, you don't have to let iTunes search for your audio files. Following
typical Mac conventions you can just drag-drop the folder of music you want
to import onto the iTunes window. Makes perfect sense on the Mac, but it's
not normal behaviour on Windows so I didn't realize at first that it was
doable..

It's funny, I longed for iTunes for Windows because I love the playlist
interface. It's clean and simple and intuitive and I don't know of any other
player that's as good. But I don't like the file tagging/naming/etc that it
does.
