Well - in this case that aspect of WMA is based on the W3Cs SMIL
recommendation.. So you may want to ask them.

The Real format also has this type of scriptable media events as does
several other formats (Flash is approaching this from the other end:
adding video control to a scriptable environment rather than the other
round).  It's in the formats because customers wanted it.  They wanted
the ability to display some video, then link in a commercial, then show
a placard with an audio track then present a survey.

The comparison is between WMA (and WMV), SMIL, Real and Flash - not MP3
in my opinion.  MP3 is strictly a music compression technology - that's
it, nothing more.  These other formats are content presentation
platforms (several of which allow for MP3 as a scriptable asset).

Apples and oranges, man. You're saying that MS and Unix both have
security
issues. True. But the issue is not the OS, the issue is a media format.
Why
the fuck should a media file format be a vector for a virus? The
comparison
is with WMA vs. mp3, not MS vs Unix. MP3 is harmless, WMA is not. Why
would
I want a music player to support a file format like that?
