The movie was good, but it felt like a very weak imitation of Caribbean
- and Trinidad specifically - life.
The places were there, and the general mood was there...but the heart
wasn't.
The dialect and the accents were perhaps as best as could be expected of
actors that hadn't lived here for very long...
but it wasn't the true Trini rhythm of speaking. People around the
dinner table at the White House were native Trinis, but few of them had
long speaking roles.
That said, it was a good movie, and a good vehicle for introducing
Trinidad culture to the world.
VS Naipaul has repeatedly denied his roots as a Trinidadian, and I
believe calls himself an Indian. He made no meniton of Trinidad in his
acceptance speach for the Nobel Peace prize.

Actually in India we call it Holi (as per the link I provided). It is
possible that it is known as "Phagwag" in one of the thousands of
languages/dialects in India. I have never come across that word though.
Not very familiar with controversies surrounding VS Naipaul or the
movie. I have only recently come in contact with people of the
Indo-Caribbean community at the temple here in Toronto.
