the thing is, we had the machine working just fine with Windows XP
and the same configuration until the error popped up for the CMOS
battery.

Actually this system was working better than my own personal machine.

Now I can get the install process about 1/2 completed. But continues
to
stop at the same location. Is it possible there is a bad sector on the
hard drive
that some HD Diagnostic utilties are not finding?

you've probably thought of this but also, if there is a working version
of windows check for hardware conflicts.
