Who cares about laws?
er rather - it doesn't make sense to me to rationalize life in terms of existing "laws" or existing practices.

We forget that the laws (and taxation) are simply a reflection of us and what we want. As soon as we forget that --- we lose control - and any opportunity to comment. IMHO.
Governments need to rationalize laws to their people. The laws they create are reflective of the world WE want to live in. Ultimately WE need to make those decisions.
same with taxes - that's MY money damn it.
