Managed means that you can monitor and control the switch remotely.  This
is most handy when you have a NIC that goes crazy and floods the network
(not as bad as in the hub days).  If the switch is managed, you can
shutdown the port.  If not, you have to unplug the cable,

There are two kinds of management - "in band" and "out of band".  In band
means that you assign the switch an IP address and manage it either by
telnet, web, ssh, snmp or a combination of them.  Out of band means that
you connect to a serial port with a terminal or terminal emulator running
on a host.

BTW, I also use 3Com SuperStack switches in office environments.  They
compete with Dell, but have a broader line.
