I've lived in Virginia and Tennessee for the last 15 years, I've also
travelled extensively through Georgia, Arkansas and Mississippi. During
these trips we've always avoided the chain/corporate restaurants, usually
going for family owned places.

I've found that by and large, southern style cooking leans heavily towards
sugars fats and starches for instance.
