Maybe once you're there you'll find some kind of inefficiency that could be ironed out using your IT experience. You could present a prototype or something to the boss and you might get a raise/promotion, or at least hire your services to create it on the side. I've done this a few times - not at a factory, but similar. Maybe you could not show him and instead go sell the work to their competition. People are still looking for meaningful, reasonably priced information technology. Whereever there's some old bulky, stagnant industry that's stuck in a rut there's an opportunity.
