It depends on why they're paranoid.  Are they worried about malicious virii
entering via MSN Messenger?  Then I'd say "yup, a little paranoid".  Are
they worried that their employees with spend all day chatting with friends
and not get any work done?  Then I'd say "well. maybe you've got a point
there."  ;^)

Thank you Dharmesh! Bonus points for you! :-)  And thanks also for the heads
up on the router flashing.

Here's a general and related question:
Our company is rather paranoid about msn messenger and currently does not
allow it.
Does opening up this port constitute a security risk, and do you think they
are justified in their attitude?

Regards,
Patrick

If you have control over your router, you can do port forwarding. I have
done this on the linksys router. I believe the port is 3389. You will have
to check your router manual for more specifics. I would strongly advise to
flash your router with the latest image to take advantage of bug fixes,
feature upgrades and better security.

I like the sounds of this Remote Assistance via MSN Messenger. Do you or
anyone else here have experience with using this with users who are behind a
router and don't have an external ip? If it works for that it could be very
useful for me. Of course then there is the question of firewalls and ports
and if anyone can get me the straight dope on that they get serious bonus
points! ;-)

Cheers,

MS confuses the issue: only Pro will let you do "Remote Desktop" however
home WILL let you do "Remote Assistance".  They both use the same exact
technology.  The only difference is that Remote Desktop can be set up to
wait for connections where Remote Assistance is strictly on demand.

If you set both you and your folks up with MSN Messenger its drop-dead easy
to use as well.  They can go to "Actions" and "Ask for Remote Assistance"
and choose from anybody online.  (They can also right-click your name if
you're online and do the same thing).  They'll get a prompt asking them for
confirmation that they want you to see their screen and then yer in.
