I'm behind a personal router (a LinkSys) and it works fine - however since I
have "Block WAN" requests enabled I must initiate the connection. After
that SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) takes over to allow the contact.
I think as long as Messenger itself can be used, then this can be.

I like the sounds of this Remote Assistance via MSN Messenger. Do you or
anyone else here have experience with using this with users who are behind a
router and don't have an external ip? If it works for that it could be very
useful for me. Of course then there is the question of firewalls and ports
and if anyone can get me the straight dope on that they get serious bonus
points! ;-)
Cheers,

MS confuses the issue: only Pro will let you do "Remote Desktop" however
home WILL let you do "Remote Assistance". They both use the same exact
technology. The only difference is that Remote Desktop can be set up to
wait for connections where Remote Assistance is strictly on demand.
If you set both you and your folks up with MSN Messenger its drop-dead easy
to use as well. They can go to "Actions" and "Ask for Remote Assistance"
and choose from anybody online. (They can also right-click your name if
you're online and do the same thing). They'll get a prompt asking them for
confirmation that they want you to see their screen and then yer in.
