We happen to have a Linux box here that we can put up for just that
purpose. It would do it over the nextwork I assume?
On another note, I have Phil making CD's as we speak of the recently
recovered data ... :D

In terms of going forward, I keep all of my digital photos on a machine
and would hate to lose them. At the same time, I am a busy person and
cannot be bothered to back them up on a regular basis.
What I did, and this is the poor man's solution to the problem, is set
up a cron job that copies all new pictures to a linux box I use for
development. The job checks hourly to see if any new photos have been
added, and copies any new items. That way, I have a second set of pics
on another machine at all times. When the feeling hits me, I back
everything up to CD-Rs (the feeling hasn't hit yet).
Took about 20 minutes to write the Perl script that does this, and maybe
five minutes to write the cron job. If it would be useful, I would be
happy to send you a copy.

This is my feeling too Ben. Recovering the deleted ones is a miracle.
I'm so glad I suddenly remembered that we did that.
I put out feelers elsewhere too and someone else gave us some good
ideas, even contacting the tech department of a university.
With most of the pictures back, I feel better ... the rest of the data
we can take our time and try to recover.
Contacting IBM and asking about failures with this drive might uncover
something too. Who knows, maybe they'll take it back and put the
physical drive in another casing? LOLOLOL Who knows.

This won't stop me from taking pics and lots of them, but it will
certainly keep us on our toes to either have a RAID setup or backup a
LOT more often!!!!!!! Like as soon as these pictures are recovered!!!!
