That's not a typical cell phone thing.  I have Suncom - AT&T, and I get a CSR in about 15 seconds every time I call.  I also have unlimited calling to anywhere as long as I am within a certain two-county area, the two that I am most commonly in.  If I am outside of that area, I get 300 minutes per month.  All this for $49.95  + extras per month - comes to about $63 every month, and the service is excellent.  Of course, I don't do web or pictures or anything like that, but does anybody really need to?  It's a stinkin' phone.

Sprint is not my favorite company.

They turned my phone off for no reason one time and it took two weeks of
calling to get them to straighten it out. The funny thing was, I could
call Sprint's customer support, but no one else in the outside world. I
would call them from the phone that was having problems and they would
argue with me that I could not be using the phone with the problems.
They thought the phone was broken.

The worst part was they charged me for the service they did not provide
and were unwilling to adjust the bill. So I cancelled, and then they
offered me a free month of service. The phone immediately stopped making
outside calls, so I called them back and asked to have the service
  cancelled.

I got a bill next month for the free air time they did not provide, and
I probably paid for about 3 months of service I never received all told.
Anyways, that's why I refuse to carry a cell phone with me these days,
it never worked. I never thought it was a Sprint problem per se, just a
  cell phone thing.

Absolutely true about Sprint's customer service.  My boss and his family
all have one, I am expected to work with their phones from time to time.
I spent over an hour waiting for tech support last week and finally gave
up. My fiancee had the same problem two weeks ago.

You can also Google 'Sprint Customer Support' and see all kinds of
  peoples' rants about Sprint.

    Paul,

If you can wait until the new year, the telecom guy here says that
there will probably be VERY aggressive selling going on. The cell
companies REALLY need to compete now that numbers are portable, they
just are not going to do it until after the holidays (they figure that
people giving gifts are going to buy regardless). He tells me that the
  deals should be quite good.

As far as companies, he recommends Verizon or AT&T Wireless. Avoid
Sprint like the plague, their corporate culture is that time spent on
customer service is wasted. They simply DO NOT CARE about their
  customers.

    Verizon:
Pro - Largest network, good service
Con - Tend to charge for added features that others include (call
waitiing, forwarding, etc) Lots of nickel and dime

    AT&T Wireless:
Pro - Best Customer Service in industry (according to my guy here),
good network (about equal to Sprint PCS, but be careful in rural areas)
Con - Some connection issues in outlying areas. May be slightly more
  expensive.

    Hope this helps...
