My point is that schools, taken as a group, do not do their jobs very well. You as, ahem, a shining example of their success to the contrary. JJ called me from Ireland tonight and I told him that an email list I was on was dissolving into an argument over the proposition that American schools were pretty bad. There was a short pause and we both started laughing. The thing speaks for itself, with all due respect to the good schools and good teachers out there. The fact that there are exceptions does not change the validity of the rule :)
