You guys make me soooo glad I live far enough south that stuff doesn't happen
here.

That really sucks, big time!

I feel your pain.  I had a bad week.

One of our major support personnel was on vacation.  So I know something
  will always go wrong.

Monday, much to my surprise was uneventful.

Tuesday, it takes me almost twice as long to get to work because of lots
of snow.  About 4pm our corporate web site starts to have problems.
After looking around it appears that so much traffic is hitting the site
that the AS/400 connections are not going away fast enough and end up
gobling up all TCP ports.  Eventually, it consumes so many ports that
the site goes down because it cannot reach our SQL DB that drives the
server.  I am able to get it "refreshed" by stopping IIS and disable the
NIC, reenable the NIC and then IIS.  However, the site was down for
  about 45 minutes.  UGH!

Wednesday, about 11:30am the web site starts to have problems, again.
However, I am not notified until about 1pm.  The SQL connections going
to SQL DB are stumbling over each other.  What the hell?!?!?  They are
continuously locking each other.  Try to disable IIS & NIC and reenable
the NIC and IIS.  That works for about 5 minutes and then the site goes
back into a locking frenzy.  So I start killing Web site SPIDs left and
right.  After about 10 minutes the site seems ok.  But about 30 minutes
later the site goes into a frenzy again.  G*D [EMAIL PROTECTED] IT!  I kill SPIDs
again.  Then the manager of IS for my location comes to my desk to write
a PC email to a client that uses our site to enter hundreds of orders a
day.  They are very sensitive about this.  It is fine for about 1 hour
and then goes into a frenzy again.  I kill more SPIDs for about 15
minutes and watch it closely for about 10 minutes.  The site is finally
  "stable".

Thursday, I am so parinoid about the site that I frequently review the
error logs and locking on the SQL DB.  About lunch time find out there
is a major issue with the order entry system that is quickly put under
control.  I have so many projects piled on me and help desk that I try
to focus and get a couple taken care of.  Tomorrow, our IS department
has a chili cook-off.  I start browning the ground beef in the crock-pot
  overnight and preping at night.

Friday, I get up early to finish putting everything together and let it
start to working together.  I unplug the crock-pot and put it in the
front-passanger floor of my car.  I get going to work.  On my way there
I get a phone call on my mobile phone that the company I work for (not
the client that I have been at for 1 yr and 9 mo) is about to go under.
They are living month to month.  I am pretty much the only consultant
that has a steady 40+ hour bill week.  I am on a major express in
Chicago that is packed with temperature about 0 degrees.  Yes, zero.  I
am crossing an overpass and the Expedition in front of me stops.  I have
plenty of room to stop.  That is if there was no black ice.  So my car
slides at about 30 MPH into the back of the SUV.  My hood crumples, the
front license plate is implanted into the radiator, and my air bag goes
off. About that time I get hit from behind by a Dodge Ram.  During all
of this chili goes all over the front passenger side of my car, mobile
phone goes flying, crock pot lands on my mobile phone, crock pot breaks,
chili goes inside my phone, I smell like chili, and I take a day off.
Funny thing is that his (Ram) front bumper looks worse then my back
bumper.  My car is a Hyundai Sonata 2000.   This happened in the middle
lane as cars pass by on both sides.  Let me tell you, I now know why
people complain about the dust given off by air bags.  I was practically
choking.  In my daze I rolled down the windows to let the dust get out.
I don't make it to work that day, I instead go to a brunch with my wife
who is currently suffering from a mild migrane.  I start to get really
achy and feel bad, so we go to the ER to have me checked out.  After 3
hours and 9 x-rays they tell me that nothing is wrong, but my muscles
will ache for a few days.

Saturday, I wake up and feel more achy then the day before, but
all-in-all I feel more emotionally stable.  So I wait to hear whether or
not my car is totaled and if my insurance will go up.  I am not looking
forward to exploring the car shopping market, again.

Did I mention that I will have to replace both car seats, my mobile
phone, and crock-pot?  I will have to see what my insurance says this
week.  I would like to get this resolved quickly.

Hopefully, all of you had a better week and weekend then we did.

  Kevin

  Subject: Bad Weekend..

Friday night was a gig.  It was a small place so we only brought one PA
speaker.  Which we then found out didn't work.  We ended up using our
monitor as the PA speaker, which was not nice.  I'm not looking forward
  to
having to replace the PA speakers.  Equipment troubles always put me in
  a
  sour mood.

While unpacking the van, I slipped on ice in my driveway and fell flat
  on
my back.  I have a few bruises and every part of me aches, but otherwise
  I
  appear okay.

Saturday night my computer starts acting up and won't load.  I have no

restore disk, and Win2000 won't recover itself.  After much struggling,
  I
re-install Windows.  I tried to use windows update, but it breaks while
installing the latest service pack.  The computer won't boot again.
  This
time I'm able to recover the OS.  I again manually downloading the
  updater
for service pack 4.  It crashes and Windows no longer boots (Again).

I restore the OS again I decide its time to upgrade to XP (I have the
  MS
Action Pack sitting in a box next to my desk, why not use the
software?).  The upgrade seems to have went pretty well.  My data drive
seems unharmed.  The applications are still here, but nothing will load,
  I
assume because the registry was wiped out during the OS re-install.

I'm in the process of reinstalling all the apps.  It appears that K9
  (my
spam catcher) lost all my "settings" so I'm stuck to marking emails
  again
(which is a pain until it "learns").  Navigator won't load for reasons I

don't understand yet.  I click the link and see an "pointer hourglass"
  for
a second and then nothing.  I really loved tabbed browsing, so I'll miss

  it.

I also discovered that I lost my Navigator bookmark file somewhere
  along
the line of installing / uninstalling.  That is my major upset of the
  moment.

On the bright side, when I fell on the ice, I did not crack my head
  open
( between my car and the house there is barely enough room to stand
sideways; its amazing I didn't hit either the car or house on the way
down).  Also XP seems to have these cool Internet games.  I'm enjoying
playing Reversi (AKA Othello) and Checkers.
