but the lappywouldn't even boot up it the farthest it goes is to this screen that says OS is corrupt

  NO it does not. AFAIK it puts the computer back to factory original configuration. I think that means you would lose all your data, cowboy. I've never tried this, but here's an idea -- if both PC and laptopn have NIC cards, you could get a patch cable......
