I wrote that before I was told it was a contract position via a recruiter.
But Windows media gurus are in short supply

I disagree completely. I know of at least 8 Microsoft contractors who
have been laid off in the last 12 months, most of them were replaced by
overseas workers at a fraction of their salaries. Two of the people I
know had PhDs, and one of them had only been there 9 months.
Again (and I think everyone is saying this), take the job if you want it
but realize there is a good chance it will not be there forever. And
keep us all informed about whatever happens.

Well, consider this: Actually it is a no-brainer.
Microsoft does not lay off, ever.
Long term Microsoft Employees are very wealthy
You had better have a collection of extremely compelling reasons to
reject the
MS offer. They are going to be around after many others aren't.
The problem I can see with the current employer who is paying in the
mid-40s,
jumping to match the offer from Microsoft, would make you stand out in
such a
way that co-workers would become resentful. Plus if you are worth mid
$70s, why
has not your current employer come forward in the past? That is, if
they really
have your best interests at heart. Your current working environment
might well
become untenable under those circumstances.
