AND money raising dogs/cats/ferrets/whatever other lovely animal, they might
as well get some money back for their efforts. I am, however, surprised
that by selling a pup at $500 - $1500, people aren't really profitting that
much.

They don't always lose money - Breeders are in it for profit, but many are
in it
to produce show animals - Show animals will never compete if they are
unhealthy,
have bad genetic traits, or are mis-treated.
Dog shows are very popular - regardless of breed.
