The old company can pretty much only tell them how long your were there, how
much you made and what your duty position was.  They can't really say much
about you.  Now you could list the old boss as a reference to get around
  that.

  Subject: Question on Job References

Hey guys, when your new [potential] job calls up your old job to ask stuff
about you, what kind of things do they ask?  Do they also ask for proof of
my occupation there?  Like a W-2 form  or something.  And can i coordinate
with my old boss too, like maybe ask him to say certain things about me?
  ehehehehehehe.

  Thanks
