This reminds me of the paper I proofed for my daughter last night on the main
characters in Crime & Punishments.   Basically, the author was making fun of
people who joined causes because it seemed like the cool thing to do or to
pursue personal ambitions.  Neither really had a clue about what they were
supporting, just a few catch phrases.

Looks like not much has changed since 1850's.
