External hard drive = case (like your friend showed you) + a hard drive.

There's nothing special about them.  They're just drives stuffed in a case.

I've used these quite a bit in the past, for a CD-RW drive that I used
on different machines and for external hard drive storage.  I've had
zero issues.

CompUSA, Newegg, etc. all carry these things.  They've got them for 2.5"
drives, IDE devices (hard drives, CD-ROM drives, DVD drives), you name it.

They're a very cost effective way to get an external device without
paying the premium charged by most vendors.  Stick a good IDE DVD-+RW
drive in one and save at least a hundred bucks over the cost of buying
an external DVD-+RW drive.

cheers,
Chris
