Summery of adding a second monitor.

I know this has been discussed many times before and the way I understand it, I should be able to add a second monitor pretty easily.

I have a Compaq running windows 2000 professional on it.  I should be able to go into our IS surplus store room, find the best de-commissioned monitor there and plug it in as a second monitor should I?

Anything I may be misunderstanding?
