I found that Costco has excellent prices for laptops - and you can even have
them customized.

Costco has deals with HP and Dell to provide custom built and pre-built
laptops.

I have purchased 2 systems from them in the past 4 months - both were well
below the prices @ Best Buy and Circuit City.

Both are HP Pavillion ZD 7000 series

System 1: 2.8 Gig, 512 Meg DDR RAM, XP Pro, 17 inch screen (1400 x 900), 60
Gig hd, DVD / CDRW, 54 g wireless, 10 /100, 56k, USB 2.0, TV hookup,
Firewire

Price: $1700 - $200 rebate + taxes etc.. $1550 - Best Buy = $2100

System 2: 3.0 Gig, 1 Gig DDR RAM, XP Media Center, 17 inch screen (1400 x
900), 80 Gig hd, DVD+RW / CDRW, 54 g wireless, 10 /100, 56k, USB 2.0, TV
hookup, Firewire

Price: $2000 - $200 rebate + taxes etc.. $1850 - Best Buy = $2600

System 1 is my primary development system - has replaced my desktop -
running IIS 5.0, XP Pro, Mail / DNS / WINS / Cold Fusion server, CF Studio,
Flash Pro 2004, MS Office, and general utilities like ftp, etc. This is the
work horse.

System 2 is my digital vcr - use it record tv shows for wife - copy movies,
burn dvd's / mp3's, etc.

Anyways - the price changes frequently - look for the rebates. I didn't have
a good feeling about hp's (bad experience in the past) - but I decided to
take a chance with hp again - and quite frankly. this system has impressed
me.

Tech Support was pretty good - handled through HP - nothing is done with
Costco - except a place to purchase it.

Keep in mind - this is a desktop replacement. more so than a laptop.

Targus makes a bag perfect for the system.

I like www.tigerdirect.com <http://www.tigerdirect.com/>  - lots of name
brands (refurbs and off-lease) and no-names.  Good, sometimes great, deals
and the comfort of dealing with a large, established company.

You should also spend some time checking www.techbargains.com
<http://www.techbargains.com/>  and www.bensbargains.net
<http://www.bensbargains.net/>  daily - Dell, especially, has the odd
one-day sale to run through stick and you can walk away with a system nearly
at cost.

For $700 you may have to settle for something older - a PIII or the like,
but if you can swing it the really cool stuff seems to start at $999.  Of
course the insanely cool stuff is still $3,000 - but it's amazing what you
get for less than $1,000 nowadays.

Subject: Good prices for Laptops

Well, I'm starting to look around for a laptop that I use for my web dev
when I'm not on my main computer.  I've discovered $700 that I didn't
realize I had available in my checking account and figure that I can find
*something* for that.

At this point, I'm shopping around.  I almost got a good 2.4 GHz system off
eBay but my winning bid didn't meet the seller's reserve price.  I'm
assuming at this point in time that I didn't win the auction.  I'm not sure
where to look or really what to look for.  I use "the typical" tools and run
SQL Server Developer's Edition, MySQL Server and developer's install of CFMX
(single connection).  I'll need something that I can run all of this on.
Doesn't have to be the biggest buy on the lot, just the most computer for
the buck.

Any ideas, references or suggestions on places to avoid?

Thanks!
Hatton
