Almost forgot - System 1 also has sql svr installed.

Looking at the Sunday paper inserts shows that you can now get "System 2"
direct from HP for about $1850.

There is lots of places online - like eCost.com, and Buy.com - where you can
get pretty good laptops for a decent price.

In general - I find the online stores to be much lower than retail stores.

Office Max, CompUSA have sales almost every other week - where they have
lead-loss products (products reduced in price to get you in the store) - but
the laptops generally have 256 meg of ram and a small hd. would require some
upgrading.

Much of it depends on how much you are willing to spend - I needed a large
screen (coming from a 21" screen on the desktop).

I think the screen is probably the biggest cost factor for a laptop.

If you don't need a 17" screen - 15" screen are available almost every
online for reasonable prices.

After the screen - price is based on speed, memory, and hd space - and
features like built-in wireless, etc.

For my system (system 1 - development) - I am considering upgrading to the
full 2 Gig of ram.

Have noticed some slowing down - with the all the stuff I run at the same
time.

Also - the prices I gave are about 4 months old. They will probably be
different now.

I like www.tigerdirect.com <http://www.tigerdirect.com/>  - lots of name
brands (refurbs and off-lease) and no-names.  Good, sometimes great, deals
and the comfort of dealing with a large, established company.

You should also spend some time checking www.techbargains.com
<http://www.techbargains.com/>  and www.bensbargains.net
<http://www.bensbargains.net/>  daily - Dell, especially, has the odd
one-day sale to run through stick and you can walk away with a system nearly
at cost.

For $700 you may have to settle for something older - a PIII or the like,
but if you can swing it the really cool stuff seems to start at $999.  Of
course the insanely cool stuff is still $3,000 - but it's amazing what you
get for less than $1,000 nowadays.

Subject: Good prices for Laptops

Well, I'm starting to look around for a laptop that I use for my web dev
when I'm not on my main computer.  I've discovered $700 that I didn't
realize I had available in my checking account and figure that I can find
*something* for that.

At this point, I'm shopping around.  I almost got a good 2.4 GHz system off
eBay but my winning bid didn't meet the seller's reserve price.  I'm
assuming at this point in time that I didn't win the auction.  I'm not sure
where to look or really what to look for.  I use "the typical" tools and run
SQL Server Developer's Edition, MySQL Server and developer's install of CFMX
(single connection).  I'll need something that I can run all of this on.
Doesn't have to be the biggest buy on the lot, just the most computer for
the buck.

Any ideas, references or suggestions on places to avoid?

Thanks!
Hatton
