My grandfather was in the Army Air Corps, and flew constantly over Germany.
He has a shadow box of medals from then, but refuses to talk about what he
experienced at all. It affected him greatly, I am sure, although not having
known him at a young age, I cannot say for sure how much. I do know he was
very rough on my dad, but dont know if this was a product of the war or his
own upbringing. I also, am very proud of the sacrifices he made for his
country and others, and have thanked him many times before, as well as my
grandmother. They are both still alive and in their mid-eighties. Their
perseverence in whatever life throws at them is an inspiration for me.

For years he suffered from what was now called PTSD. He joined up in 1940 at
age 16 and left the military in 1946. He never talked very much about it,
but I was able to piece together some of the things. He was rescued from a
torpedoed ship in 1941 that was going over to Britian, served in England,
Italy and Europe. I am very proud of what he did, and the person he was. He
is one of the standards I try and measure up to.
