place to "protect the children." The result is that it would be the rare child
who could emotionally handle atrocities such as were common place during the
Nazi Reign, and which also is common place in many places in the world today.
Today's children are never taught to cope with the possibilities of extreme
behavior, and as a result there are many new psychological maladies created to
define the emotional injuries caused by that lack of conditioning. The most
conservative families have committed incredible amounts of one kind of abuse or
another against their children in the name of discipline.
There is no doubt that the holocaust happened, especially to those who were
among the living during that terrible period of time. What is even worse, is
that the mind-set that gave rise to it, still exists, albeit called by other
names, such as "ethnic cleansing", or words to that effect.
Imagine a society where a girl, who was accused of infidelity, rightfully or
wrongly is brought before a "council of elders" and methodically gang-raped
which is considered just punishment in parts of the world today, while the male
of the species gets a free ride.
Atrocities such as those committed by one faction against another in the name of
some kind of religion regularly takes place as well.
The American psyche was injured by the 9-11 attack on the civilian population,
It is again being injured by revelations that it could have been prevented.
Where will it end? Who knows what is best? I am not sure anyone knows at
this point.
Another thing is, the capacity of the human psyche to absorb the terrible
things that happen in times like these and minimize the affects to the
individual, no matter what side of the fence they are on. This has got to be
the single biggest blessing/curse of the human race.
By minimizing, I dont mean that the things that happen are any less horrible
or painful, but I am referring to the numbing affect that happens, and the
eventual societal amnesia that seems to occur, leading to the periodic
reoccurances of these phenomena thoughout the world. Any of you psychology
buffs care to comment?
