Can't we all sum it up with.......... any country/government will pretty much do anything to protect its position/power.

We have the luxury of being the most powerful, so we don't have to resort to "barbaric" practices.

But believe me, if it weren't that way, we'd be throwin stones and cuttin off people's head too!  It's a huge assumption, but when you really think about it, have we really seen any progress towards the way we treat each other?  I mean yeah, we cut off alot of social taboos, classism.  No wait take classism back.  I think it's still here, but not IN YOUR FACE like India's caste system.

No, I was not implying that Americans were excessive, or that its
  behaviour was exceptional at all.

What I said, and I thought it was quite clear, was that America is no
stranger to barbaric acts during its formative years.

The bit about genetics, my girlfriend and her temper was meant as humor.

No it is by no means genetic. Its more cultural and environmental.
  Please
don't try a genetic or socio-biological argument with me, I think I may
  know
a bit more about the field than you. There is no current reliable
  scientific
data that suggests that violent behavior is genetically based, or if
  there
is, then it only accounts for a very small proportion of the explained
  variance.
