Personally, I prefer a combination.  For example, I took a series of
Flash courses to get me started, and then got a couple of books to keep
me going.

Generally speaking, I like classes (assuming they're well-taught) to
start out, and for any concepts I have trouble getting out of books.
For general improvement, books and articles are the thing for me.
