doing. I think that it has its place and is very effective for many
enterprise application development needs. But for the projects we were
working on, we lost much money developing sites in .NET, as the process
took much longer than it would have taken us to do in CF. Even our 2
very seasoned VB developers took a huge amount of time to do things in
VB.NET, which IMHO we could have done in half the time or less with CF.
Of course, I have no hard statistics to quantify these feelings, and
ultimately it could be more indicative of the sad state of the company I
was working for at the time, not to mention poor job estimation
practices (for example, many projects were bid as CF jobs, then the CEO
made a decision to develop them in .NET at the same price, when we had
very little code libaries for .NET versus our strong ones for CF).
I definitely see the power of .NET and there were many things I liked
about it. But in my mind, it is not a rapid development environment --
which is probably just fine for many organizations -- like CF.
I should have also prefaced this with the caveat that I come from a
graphic design background and not a CS background, so that could have a
lot to do with my perspective. I like my web development fast and easy,
just like my... um, nevermind. Bad analogy.
Although, I will mention that many of the other developers for that
company sort of felt the same way. They liked .NET but agreed that it
really ate up our time and resources compared to CF. Commonly heard
exclamation around that office was, "I could have done that so much
faster in CF!"
I've not messed with the new version of .NET, but I've heard it is leaps
and bounds superior to the previous one.
