Good question:  The presentation is first in a series to integrate a few
merging groups within technology.  We're trying to build up a similar
skillset among disparate groups, and this is the first in a bunch of
sessions (that get much more complex as time goes on).  I believe that the
person in charge didn't expect that the entire group will have had HTML
experience before - not sure.

Since it's the first of a series of web presentations, I thought maybe I'd
start out with an overview of how the web works:  client/web server etc.
and explain where HTML fits in.  Then delve deeper into mechanics and other
dimensions of web pages (CSS etc).  I will definitely try to focus on the
"what's new,"  like you mentioned.  I think that people's HTML is going to
be standard knowledge, but no one here has used much XHTML (or even know
what it is, for that matter). CSS, while it should be used EVERYWHERE,
isn't.

We'll see how it goes...  There seems to be more interest in CSS from the
people I asked, so maybe I'll focus there.

The suggestions given are good ones. Just out of curiosity, why a brown bag
on HTML if people know it? Is there a subset of developers that don't
actually know it (i.e. new people)? Is there a problem with people not
writing good HTML and just winging it? (I see that a lot.) Is there a need
to define best practices or organizational standards, like using a doctype
or which doctype to code to? Is there a need to see "what's new" like CSS or
XHTML?

For me, I would need to have these answers in order to decide what I was
presenting. In fact, I've been volunteered to do a presentation on CSS. In
our case it's a "what's new" and potentially best practices.
