  Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

  On ZDNet:

State Sen. Liz Figueroa, a Democrat from the Bay Area city of
Fremont, said Thursday that it should be illegal for a company
to scan the text of its customers' e-mail correspondence and
display relevant advertising--even if customers explicitly
agree to the practice in exchange for a gigabyte of storage.

"Telling people that their most intimate and private e-mail
thoughts to doctors, friends, lovers and family members are
just another direct-marketing commodity isn't the way to promote
e-commerce," Figueroa said in a statement, which called Gmail
customers' correspondence "a direct-marketing opportunity for
  Google."

The rest can be found at: http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1104-5198082.html

Can someone tell me why this should be illegal?  If you've used Yahoo's
message lists, they put ads in all those messages. Where is the public
outcry for the victims of Yahoo's rampant marketing abuse?  If people
choose
to conduct their private business over GMail then they know what they're
getting into.  Its not like they're the only ones offering free email.
  Besides, nothing is really free.

  It just makes me crazy!
