I think this depends on the relationships. I followed a relationship from one circle to another and there was not a way back, but there was only one line connecting these circles. I started over and followed a line to another circle that was connected by two lines, here there was a precipice link to the original circle. So there is some significance with how the artist are connected some are one way others are two way for some reason.
Also, the "Last maps" in the control panel keeps track on where you have been at least a few steps, haven't tested the limits yet.
