I have problems with the way most of the Free forums work

phpBB has this annoying habit for thinking that when you return to the
forum, that you're reading every post, so if you only return to collect
a PM, or accidentally close your browser, then it removes all of your
"unread" posts

You also have the option of using YaBB, but that's Perl based and tends
to run on text files, so it can be slow

I'm now a stickler for the functionality of forums - they must always
have things like a "jump to latest unread post", which most just seem to
ignore - they expect people to read every single post as soon as it's
written :P

If you do have a few weeks, then you could always throw a very simple
bit of functionality together for posting, editing and PMing with that
time - worry about the more "admin" rated functions later

I'm a "fan" of writing your own stuff as you can integrate it into your
existing code seemlessly
