A good agent...hmmm, just make sure they don't rip you off. Being a
first-time contracor can mean that they say you won't be able to get the
better rates (stupid or but true). I would actually suggest that as you
are coming over from Kiwi land, that your best bet is to inform them you
were contracting over there. (Who's gonna know)
You will need to set up a limited company. I would also recommend
http://www.pcgroup.org.uk/ for help on the Contracting Company set up.
Particularly now that IR35 is a reality. As to accountants. Sheesh, I've
switched mine a couple of times. It depends what you want. I personally
think you should go for a 'local' accountant. I've had horrendous
experiences with some of the big we'll do your accound for 69 per month,
accountants. I mean I just want to send my accountant a shoe box with
receipts, not fill in massive numbers of forms. I even had to have my
current accountant re-do a year.
My current accountant will come out and see me late at night which suits
me fine and means I don't have to start taking time off to see my
accountant. He also deals easily with having multiple revenue streams
running through your company (For some time I ran a couple of e-commerce
sites through the company). This flexibility is important to me.
In the case of being a Kiwi, you may though, want to look at how long you
want to stay. There may be tax advantages which a large accountancy firm
may be able to look into better than your local accountant, but then you
will pay through the nose for this type of knowledge.

Thanks for the feedback...
I am just starting out in Contract and welcome any knowledge from people
who
have already travelled this path.
I have 1 year CF with 3+ years web development, so I guess I should be
looking for 40 - 50 an hour?
Do you recommend setting up your own company?
Can you recommend any good agents around the South East and London?
Thanks guys for helping a poor little Kiwi boy in England! :)

All UK contracts can be got through www.jobserve.com and I do mean all.
UK CF contract rates are NOT 30 an hour. You are selling yourself cheap.
You should be looking for a minimum of 50 an hour and if you consider
yourself senior then you should be on at least 60+ an hour within the
South East.
If you do get 30 an hour make sure the agent you used declares exactly
what his/her cut is. He/She knows the current market rate for CF and
unscropulous agents may increase their cut to unacceptable levels. I'm
usually happy if an agent takes 15%. Anything more and I won't work for
through the agent no matter how exciting the job may sound :) AND don't
let an agent fob you off with a poorer rate!
