I now know that to be the case and once I figured out that mod_ssl was needed, it was 
not too hard to setup.

The main point is that for new users (reading an FAQ) is where to start in setting up 
a site to support CF and SSL can be confusing, especially as the Allaire supplied Cold 
Fusion
feature matrix indicates support for SSL.
