postgreSQL might be something you could look at
http://www.postgresql.org
I can't really provide head-to-head examples performance wise because they'd
likely be failing to take so many things into account.
I work both Mysql and Postgres reasonably hard (3-8 million rows a day with
reasonably heavy hourly summarisation) and they both required a fair amount
of tuning/configuring to maintain reliability. Postgres has some strengths
over mysql, and mysql has some over postgres. You can generally overcome any
limitations in both by being a bit resourceful - or using combinations of
both where you see fit.
Unfortunately, I can't offer you any information regarding utilising them
via CF since I only utilise them from C or Php. Please correct me if I'm
wrong, but I believe that presently you can only utilise mysql and postgres
via ODBC drivers if you're using CF, which may or may not affect the
performance and reliability you see in comparison to the performance I see.
