You don't want indexes in the option that turns them on ;-)

Apache calls this indexing.
You can dissable it by putting a .htaccess file in the directory(s) that you
don't want indexing on with the following line it:
Options -Indexes
If you have access to edit apache's configuration files (in /etc/httpd/conf)
then you can dissable the option server wide by changing the lines that
probably look similar to this:
<Directory />
Options All
</Directory>
