I actually have a list of both OSes and Linux distributions I commonly set
before ColdFusion product management everytime we do a new release of any
"On Linux/Unix Product". Let me share with ya'll:
Current Wish List:
1: FreeBSD
2: Mandrake
3: TurboLinux
4: Caldera Linux
5: Debian GNU/Linux
6: MacOSX
7: Tru64
8: Slackware
9: Linux Alpha (Preferably Red Hat on Alpha)
Originally the list was:
1: SuSE
2: Cobalt servers
3: FreeBSD
4: Mandrake
5: TurboLinux
6: Caldera Linux
7: Debian GNU/Linux
8: MacOSX
9: Tru64
10: Slackware
11: Linux Alpha (Preferably Red Hat on Alpha)
With coldfusion 5, we added support for SuSE and Cobalt. So, as you
can see, with each product iteration, I'm reaching my eventual goal of "Run
coldfusion on anything, including OS/2 Warp (joke)". It's problematic to get
everything running to say the least, but I pester everyone at this company
about it, continually. (Ask any of the CF people, including Tom Jordahl and
the CF product managers).
With that said, I figure if with every iteration and release I can
add at least 1 distribution or platform, I've done something good.
Now, on the other hand, seeing as I get stuck with the hardcore
grunt work on QAing and writing the installers (New duties, yay!) I see more
and more why people pick one platform and just run with it instead of trying
to support the multitude of OSes.
So, with Neo, we shall see what we shall see, eh?
(As long as CF product management doesn't skin me alive for being the so
called "bee in thier beer".
-Jesse
P.S: See previous threads on both this list and CF-talk why it was so bloody
hard to get a C++ codebase jimmied onto so many different platforms. Java
changes that ::wink:: I just have to get product management to drink my
kool-aide.

No worries, I did say allegedly! ;^)
Jesse, Mandrake is one of the most popular distributions for people
starting out with linux. Most of the magazine reviews that are coming
out are putting Mandrake ahead of Red Hat in terms of ease of use etc.
Do you think it is in Macromedia's interest to add support for Mandrake
in addition to RedHat and SuSe?
I, for one, haven't installed ColdFusion on linux yet, apart from the
time factor, because I don't want to install Red Hat on my dev server.
I like, and am happy, with Mandrake.
Personally, I think if many others who are relatively new to linux, and
have gone and read the reviews, install Mandrake, they may not be so
keen on changing to another distro.
While I have an NT server sitting here, I won't change my linux server
to run Red Hat just to install Cold Fusion. This could also be why our
Virtual Server hosting company don't offer CF on linux!
I could be wrong.. just thought I'd mention it!
