Martin/All-
Seeing as I don't bother dealing with the "Editor Wars" (I do most of my work
in VI anyways)... Let me say this:
I am a Linux/Unix user, yes, but I do not run it as my desktop, I run Windows
for a multitude of reasons. Now, I also end up utilizing the entire MX line for
various reasons (Example Application design, coding, etc). Now, I'm rather impartial
about the entire Studio Vs. MX thing myself, but seeing as I am a frequent user of all
of them, let me say something:
1: Vernon did not make these choices. He is not to blame. Period.
2: There is a direct upgrade path to Studio: Dreamweaver MX.
3: Dreamweaver MX, as far as I am concerned, puts no more barriers between me and my
code than Studio did. It has a fully customizable interface which allows you to select
your preferred coding environment. When you start DWMX for the first time, it asks you
what your preferred environment is. You can have it imitate studio, or DW4, etc, etc.
4: Turn your applications into scrambled eggs? How? In my version of DW at least, the
engine does nothing I do not explicitly tell it too.
Listen guys. I know how much it sucks getting used to one app, and then having
the developers suddenly go "Oh, here, we changed it all". Unfortunately, this is the
way most "progress" goes.
Every time I download a new Kernel, new version of Red Hat, Debian, Solaris or
Windows, it's the same thing over and over and over again.
It's pointless to really debate the issue. DWMX may not be perfect, that's
what enhancement requests and bug reports are for. The fact is, is that DWMX IS the
upgrade path. If you want to knock it, fine, I'll go through the archives of the
mailing lists and dredge up the emails from a year ago when CFStudio 5 came out, and
most of you had the selfsame complaints.
Your arguments and gripes may be valid, but we should all try to make a point
with them. Think DWMX is a memory hog? (It runs fine on my p800/256 megs of ram), then
submit a bug with the EXACT information needed for testing.
Don't like a lack of "widgety tabs that do shiny things" then submit an
enhancement request. Please.
The same thing applies for CFMX. Matt Liotta has had a lot of problems, as
well as other with the Linux/Unix version of CFMX, they want certain things to be done
in a certain way, I tell them the same thing: Put in an enhancement request or a bug.
There are a lot of us here at Macromedia monitoring these lists, and we ARE
listening, but frankly, unless we get "an official request" through the proper
channels, our hands are completely tied.
Vernon is just doing his job, as best he can within the constraints he has
been given. Please, try to be nice to him. And we *are* listening, but we need you,
the users, to give us feedback through the channels that we can accept it in.
