Many thanks, Stace. It seems to be holding its own again and I notice that there is a 'hot fix' (Technote 22730) which we hadn't applied. But you were quite right - the client variables were being stored in the registry.
(I couldn't find much info out about these things - are there any good links for newbies who want to ensure that their Linux servers are configured properly?!)
