When faced with the same problem (and same bleak outlook for solutions...) I just wrote Perl scripts to do the larger mailings, cron runs the scripts on a regular basis. CF still handles registration confirmations and that sort of thing (and still *OCCASIONALY* has problems with even that, but it's tolerable).
A perl library called Mail::Bulkmail::Dynamic makes sending lots of personalized messages pretty easy. If you decide to go this route, I can send you some sample code.
