Not sure which of the two silly things I did but it now works. I was unzipping a tar.gz file (which usually works) from windows over a samba share. Once I moved the tar file over ftp, and untarred directly from Linux it works.

How are you getting the encrypted code to the Linux server? Are you tarring or zipping it, then moving that one file, or are you using FTP? If you're using FTP, and you don't set your FTP client to binary instead of ASCII, you might have a problem I think.
