I am not too sure regarding your problem. I would have created persistant objects( Not objects as in C++ and Jave). One good way of doing that would be to store the products in product tables in the DB (MySQL in your case). Once the customer submits his list after selection then I would have gone to the database and have made the insert in the appropriate table. Otherwise just suck the values from the tables to create your shopping items screen. I am not even bothered if the session has expired or if the customer has closed down his browser.
One interesting thing in the shoping basket would be to handle the browsers back button when the user is moving back and forth between differnnt pages in selecting items to buy. That is food for thought.
