I once wrote a script which automates the connector rebuild:

Apache 1.3x
http://www.talkingtree.com/blog/index.cfm?mode=alias&alias=Apache13ConnRebui
ld

Apache 2
http://www.talkingtree.com/blog/index.cfm?mode=alias&alias=Apache2ConnRebuil
d

The blog entries has some brief instructions on usage, and you might want to
try it.

The 404 response is not likely due to the connector requiring a rebuild but
rather due to some misconfiguration.
