If you're using the "Microsoft SQL Server" driver option within CF Administrator, that is a JDBC connection. The DataDirect drivers provided with CF are JDBC type 4 drivers. We've found that Microsoft's own JDBC drivers have worked better in some cases. I've also heard good things about the open-source jTDS drivers, and about the JTurbo drivers from New Atlanta, but I haven't done much with either yet. There isn't much to setting up any of these drivers, or creating datasources using them. You just put the JAR files in the appropriate lib directory, then specify the appropriate JDBC URLs and class driver names as specified in the documentation that comes with the driver.
