If I were a betting man I would say you are trying to install 32 bit CF8 onto a 64 bit linux server.
You might want to just install the new ColdFusion 8.1 Release Candidate that has just posted on http://prerelease.adobe.com. You will need to sign up to be part of the pre-release. But CF8.1 does have a 64 bit linux version. Ubuntu is still not an offically supported release, however. But, you could give it a try.
