I'm happy either way. The acronym CONUS is in widespread use within the
CONUS, but I am fine with a more explicit form.

I think it would be fine to give it a standardised region name to add to the
list in
http://cf-pcmdi.llnl.gov/documents/cf-standard-names/standardized-region-names
but could it avoid abbreviation in order to me more self-explanatory e.g.
contiguous_united_states[_of_america]? "conus" is not an acronym that I've ever
seen before although I expect it is familiar to inhabitants of conus.
